The Mercedes-Benz W138 260D was the first production car with a diesel engine. This model was launched in 1936 at the International Motorcycle and Motor Show in Berlin, Germany.
The revolutionary (for its time) model was powered by a 2.6-liter four-cylinder OM 138 engine with 45 horsepower. Mercedes also introduced electrically heated glow plugs in the engine to start the engine in cold weather. An extended chassis was MB 200 the basis for the installation of compression ignition engines and the resulting variant, the 260D.
